Modern Detective and Mystery Authors: #5 James Patterson

james pattersonI am a sucker for a great detective novel. We are blessed today to have a number of fine mystery writers from which to choose. I use the title “Modern” mystery and detective to differentiate between the great mystery writers of past eras. For any comprehensive list would certainly include the great Dashiell Hammett who penned such classics as The Maltese Falcon also made into a fabulous movie (buy for just $2.99) starring Humphrey Bogart. A list of that nature should also include Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle with countless short stories and four novels led by the classic [The Hound of the Baskervilles]. But I’d like to look at the authors still writing. So without further preamble, Code 451’s Top 5 Modern Mystery and Detective Authors:

#5 James Patterson

James Patterson has numerous series and stand alones some written with co-authors such as bestseller Andrew Gross; however, for our purposes I’ll focus on Patterson’s main cash cow, Alex Cross. This fine series dates back to 1993’s Along Came a Spider later made into a movie (buy now for just $2.99) starring Morgan Freeman through recently released, Merry Christmas, Alex Cross. Hollywood has also cashed in on James Patterson’s brain child in Kiss The Girls and most recently in Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry as the famed detective.

The plots are riveting and James Patterson’s style of short, fast paced chapters attracts all levels of readers. The character is a criminal psychologist whose expertise has placed him in the crosshairs of many vile criminals. Cross is likeable and principled, but seems conflicted by his obligations to his family and his career. If you’re looking for intricate writing with lots of details and description, I’d try the likes of James Lee Burke or Jeffery Deaver, but if you want a quick, attention grabbing mystery, James Patterson is a great choice!
