2013-2014 Preseason College Basketball Rankings: #18 Cincinnati Bearcats

cincinnati bearcatsThe Cincinnati Bearcats won 22 games a season ago but was only 9-9 in the Big East before losing to Creighton in the 1st Round of the NCAA tournament (technically 2nd round if you count the play-in games). Back from that squad is leading scorer Sean Kilpatrick who averaged 17 points per game. Kilpatrick is joined by senior forward Justin Jackson as the lone returning full-time starters. Jackson is primarily a rebounder so the Bearcats must replace the scoring of departed point guard Cashmere Wright and two-guard JaQuon Parker who both averaged double figures a year ago. Coach Mike Cronin will depend upon unproven talents: sophomore Jeremiah Davis III who after a medical redshirt last season offers a deep threat to this squad, sophomore Shaquille Thomas who has loads of athleticism, and freshman Jermaine Lawrence. Shaquille Thomas was a top notch recruit but has yet to live up to the hype. Lawrence is a game changer; at 6-9 with ball skills and the ability to finish at the rim. Lawrence and Kilpatrick should be one of the best scoring tandems in college basketball.

Projected Cincinnati Bearcats Lineup

PG Ge’Lawn Guyn, JR 6-2 180
G Sean Kilpatrick, SR 6-4 215
F Titus Rubles, SR 6-7 210
F Jermaine Lawrence, FR 6-9 200
F Justin Jackson, SR 6-8 220

Key Reserves

G Jeremiah Davis III, SO 6-3 200
F Shaquille Thomas, SO 6-7 190
C Jamaree Strickland, FR 6-10 270
PG Troy Caupain, FR 6-3 195

Cincinnati’s one true hole is point guard, the likely starter is Ge’Lawn Guyn but he has a reputation for lacking work ethic. If he struggles, freshman Troy Caupain could get a shot. Caupain is a nice scorer but I question if he has the quickness to handle the job at this stage of his career.
